The summer before I became a high school senior, I was required to read the George Orwell novel 1984. Published in the late 40′s, it attempted to portray the world as it might be in the year 1984. Basically it showed the world in a totalitarian state, where an entity known as “Big Brother” was always watching you, among other things. Could this be happening now? Allow me to explain my question…
Earlier today, I read this artcile on Fox News concerning the health care debate. If what it says is true, then Big Brother is most definitely watching. This is apparently a new tactic put in place by the White House to control the message on the health care debate. Quite a number of people do not like this. According to the article, a blog was posted by the White House asking people to report “fishy” information about the health care debate. Now, my interpretation of this is anything negative concerning Obama’s so-called health care reform should be reported. Now, is it me, or does this slightly violate the First Amendment?

“There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there,” the blog concludes. “Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov.”
OK, so I admit, this can be interpreted in any number of ways, but my interpretation is that they don’t want people to really know what is in this bill. It’s a vain attempt to control what people see about this and not allow anything “fishy” to be spoken of this particular bill.
Read the article and form your own interpretation. I know this for sure: If this is a plot to control what people see and write about this bill, then that violates the First Amendment right to free speech that we all enjoy today.
